Newman Outreach Program
About The Service Immersion
The Newman Outreach Program (NOP) is at the heart of the Newman Catholic Campus Ministry. While there are many opportunities for service at Virginia Tech, NOP is different in its approach. Students see themselves as accompanying a community, growing in relationships with those they serve, and being open to any needs of the community. It is less about building a roof and more about building a relationship. Instead of telling others where we would like to serve, we give voice to those we come in contact with.
Each year Hokies participate in the NOP experience, serving both domestically and abroad during Spring Break. These experiences give students the opportunity to put their faith in action by serving others, living in solidarity with the community they serve, and deepening their faith life. Applications for Spring Break Trips happen in the fall semester.
Students begin their preparation months before their trip. In weekly meetings they explore Catholic Social Teaching, learn about the communities they will be visiting, and grow together as a group. Coupled with these meetings is a fundraising effort, enlisting the support of friends, family, and other Hokies.
